The Last Mile in Texas Broadband Construction

I’ve spent forty-three years in telecommunications. I’ve climbed the pole, pulled the cable, spliced the fiber, sat in the design meeting, taken the 2 a.m. outage call, and signed the punch list. In four decades, the technology has changed almost beyond recognition — from analog carrier to DWDM, from copper to PON, from party lines to gigabit-to-the-unit. But one thing has stubbornly refused to change: the last mile is still the hardest.
 
That is the mile where a beautiful network design meets a buried gas line no one mapped, where the aerial make-ready that was supposed to take four weeks takes fourteen. Where the property manager wants service in the model unit on Friday, and the boring crew is stuck behind a permit in the next county. Where the difference between a happy resident and a churned account is measured in splice loss and response time.
 

It is also the mile where most of the money — and most of the risk — in a broadband build actually lives.

That is why I’m looking forward to the Broadband Communities Summit at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, August 25–27, 2026. For those of us who build and maintain the physical network, this is the one show a year where the whole ecosystem sits down together — the property owners, the master-planned community developers, the municipal broadband authorities, the tribal nations, the rural cooperatives, and the tier-2 and tier-3 ISPs who are actually the ones lighting up America’s underserved neighborhoods. There is no better room in the country for an honest conversation about what it takes to deliver on the promises made by the funding programs.

And there is a lot of promise to deliver on. Between BEAD, RDOF, USDA ReConnect, state matching funds, and the private capital flowing into MDU broadband, the money to build is finally here. What is scarce — and getting scarcer — is the experienced field organization to actually put fiber in the ground, in the air, and on the wall.

That is the conversation my team and I want to have at the Summit.

Every seam is a delay. Every delay is a resident who churned, a subsidy clock that ran out, a property owner who lost faith. So we collapsed the seams.
